About 1850 Wine Cellars

The official story of California begins in the year 1850. Statehood is pronounced for the California Republic and with the Gold Rush in full swing, people from seemingly every country arrived in our state to stake their claim for a new life.

Fortunately for us, most of these settlers and pioneers came from cultures where wine was an integral part of their lifestyle. Sailors passing through Italy brought vine cuttings of Barbera bundled in the hulls of their ships. Immigrants traveling through Ellis Island came with clippings of Primitivo (Zinfandel) packed in their suitcases and sewn into the linings of their overcoats. Portuguese settlers introduced Mataro to our nation's soil. Even the king of all grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon, made its way from France early in our state‚Äôs history. These heritage varietals, and many others, initially found good success in the hills of the gold country and have continued to, despite many challenges along the way.

The story of 1850 Wine Cellars mirrors the spirit of those early settlers. Born of a small group of friends that shared a vision of exploring the vinicultural prospects of Amador, Fair Play, and El Dorado, our goal is to produce wines that pay homage to those pioneers. The gold hills have always held treasures for those willing to pour heart in soul into the land, and we feel strongly that this region still holds opportunity for these heritage varietals. Our desire to coax the best wine from these rich hillsides and share them with our friends in our motherlode!
